# 187: The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy

You get a gold star if you know any of this!

If you where asked to name some of Britain's most successful football teams the usual Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, and Liverpool would come out, as those teams are still successful now. Maybe some people would mention Nottingham Forest with there 2 European Championships, and the more optimistic may even mention Aston Villa won won that competition also 25 years ago to the day. But none of these clubs have ever won the World Club Cup, yet there is a team in England that has, twice!!

West Auckland Town won the World Club Cup in both 1909 and 1911 and has a result were allowed to keep the "Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy" (picture right) beating FC Winterthur (Switzerland) 2-0 in 1909 and Juventus (Italy) 6-1 in 1911.

The competition was sponsored by Lipton tea making it the first football tournament to carry a sponsor in the world. Even more random than that Sir Thomas Lipton was a sports man himself and still holds the record for the most time anyone has contested the Americas Cup.
